Haven Antwerpen 2013
Ik heb veel schilderijen gemaakt in de havens van Amsterdam en Rotterdam, en daar ben ik nog lang niet uitgekeken, maar dit keer was ik in Antwerpen.
I painted a lot in the ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and I am far from being bored with it, but this time I was in Antwerp.
Piet Mondriaan
Tot 5 januari 2014 is er in het Amsterdam Museum een tentoonstelling over de Amsterdamse jaren van Piet Mondriaan te zien. In die periode schilderde hij nog figuratief. Ik hou heel erg van dat vroege werk en het fijne is dat er voor mij veel onbekende schilderijen hangen.
Until January 5 2014 the Amsterdam Museum shows paintings of the Amsterdam years of Piet Mondrian. During that period he painted figurative. I love his early work very much and there are many for me unknown paintings to see in the exhibition.
Amstel en Magere Brug (70 x 150 cm) 3013
Dit werk heb ik gemaakt in opdracht. Men wilde graag een groot schilderij van dit specifieke deel van de Amstel. Het is 150 cm breed.
This painting was made by commission. The people wanted a large painting of this particular part of the Amstel River. It is 150 cm wide.
Op vrijdag 1 november 2013 werd het mooie boekje “IJstijden zichtbaar in het landschap” gepresenteerd in recreatiepaviljoen Breeland. Twintig kunstenaars hebben zich laten inspireren door de heuvels en kuilen die nog steeds zichtbaar zijn in het Drentse landschap en ontstaan zijn door het landijs dat in de laatste ijstijd tot ver in Nederland reikte.
Het is een prachtig boekje geworden met daarin een deel van de kunst, maar ook enkele gedichten.
Last Friday (11:1:2013) the beautiful booklet “Ice ages visible in the landscape” was presented in recreation Pavilion Breeland. Twenty artists have been inspired by the hills and ditches that are still visible in the landscape of Drenthe and are caused by the ice during the last ice age. It has become a beautiful booklet containing a part of the art, but also some poems.

Soms krijg je de kans om oud werk terug te zien. Deze drie schilderijen verkocht ik in 2003 en onlangs had de koper nog een werk aangeschaft. Ik ging het zelf brengen en kwam in een prachtig huis vol kunst. Ik ben benieuwd waar hij het nieuwe schilderij gaat ophangen.
Sometimes you get the chance to see old work. I sold these three paintings in 2003 and recently the buyer purchased another work. I was going to bring it myself and ended up in a beautiful house full of art. I’m curious where he will hang the new painting.

Vanaf 28 september (2013) exposeer ik bij Galerie De Vis in Harlingen. Voor het eerst samen met Elisabeth Jonkers. Ze heeft net als ik de Wackers Academie gedaan, maar maakt totaal ander werk. Ze schildert het liefst vrouwen, maar maakt ook af en toe landschappen. Waar ik heel precies de kleur die ik zie probeer te treffen, is zij heel uitbundig en geeft er altijd haar eigen draai aan. De expositie duurt tot 30 november.

From September 28 (2013) I will have a exhibition at Galerie “De Vis” (The fish) in Harlingen. For the first time together with Elisabeth Jonkers. She went to the same art school as me, the Wackers Academy, but she makes totally different work. She prefers to paint women but also paints landscapes occasionally. The exhibition will end at November 30.

Vorige week werd De Hondsrug (Drenthe) door UNESCO uitgeroepen tot Geopark. In Nederland is dat een nieuw begrip. Wat is een Geopark eigenlijk?
De Hondsrug is ontstaan in de IJstijd. Het is een schitterend gebied waar ik ben geboren (Annen) en opgegroeid (Gieten). Een aantal schilders is bezig om de zogenaamde hotspots te schilderen. Van 1 t/m 10 november 2013 worden de werken tentoongesteld bij Breeland in Annen.

Last week UNESCO elected The Hondsrug (Drenthe) as a Geopark. In Netherlands this is a new concept. What is a Geopark?
A Geopark is an UNESCO defined area with one or more places of scientific interest, not only from a geological point of view but also by its archaeological, ecological and cultural value in the UNESCO International Network of Geoparks program.
The Hondsrug is originated in the ice age. It is a beautiful area where I was born (Annen) and raised (Gieten). A number of painters is painting the so-called hotspots. From 1 to 10 November 2013 the works will be exhibited at Breeland in Annen.
Bij het kerkje in Ezinge
Een van de beste figuratieve schilders in Nederland is Matthijs Röling. Ik heb het voorrecht om een keer per jaar met een groepje schilders samen met hem naar Frankrijk af te reizen om daar te werken. Na de zomer komen we nog een keer bij elkaar in de paradijselijke tuin van Matthijs. Een prachtig onderwerp om te schilderen zou je zeggen, maar ik koos toch voor het Groningse landschap dat ik vanaf de terp kon zien. In een tuin is veel te veel te zien voor mij.

One of the best figurative painters in Netherlands is Matthijs Röling. I have the privilege to travel once a year with him and a group of painters to France to work there. After the summer we meet again in the magnificent garden of Matthijs. A great subject to paint , but I chose the countryside of Groningen that I could see from the little church. In a garden is way too much to see for me.

Het Amsterdam Museum verzamelt Amsterdamse stadsgezichten. De conservator en een medewerker kwamen naar mijn atelier om te zien of ik werk had dat interessant was voor het museum. En jawel. Ze kozen deze twee schilderijen. Een van het IJ op een mistige dag en de Zuidas van buiten de stad geschilderd.
Een paar weken later werden ze opgehaald. De vrachtwagen was wel een beetje groot vond ik…

The Amsterdam Museum is collecting Amsterdam cityscapes. The curator and a co-worker came to my studio to see if I had interesting paintings for the museum. And yes. They chose these two paintings. One of the IJ on a foggy day and the Zuidas painted from the edge of the city. A few weeks later they picked them up. I felt the truck was a bit large…
In het Amsterdam Museum is tot augustus 2015 het portret van Saskia te zien. Het beroemde schilderij van Rembrandt is een bruikleen van het National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Wilde bloemen schilderen (painting wild flowers)
Nu ik veel tijd doorbreng op het Brabantse platteland raak ik steeds meer geboeid door alles wat er groeit en bloeit. Het land rondom het huis ligt deels braak, waardoor er prachtige wilde planten groeien. Een ander deel is speciaal ingezaaid om de bijen van de buurman van nectar te voorzien. En dan is er nog de tuin. Het is steeds weer een verrassing wat er gaat bloeien.
Now that I spend a lot of time on the Brabant countryside I get increasingly fascinated by everything that grows and flourishes. The land around the house is partly not cultivated, leaving beautiful wild plants to grow. Another part is specially sown meant to give nectar to the neighbor’s bees. And then there’s the garden. It’s a surprise what’s going to flourish next.
