Noordwijkerhout

Deze plek heb ik ontdekt tijdens het schilderfestival van Noordwijk in 2007. Ik ga regelmatig terug om te zien hoe de akkers erbij liggen. In het voorjaar groeien er meestal narcissen. Dit zijn alle schilderijen die ik er vanaf 2007 heb gemaakt.

This place I discovered during the festival of Noordwijk in 2007. I often go back to see what the field are like. In spring they usually grow daffodils.

Frankrijk (France)

Landweg Frankrijk 40 x 60 cm

De afgelopen weken was het weer in Frankrijk ook niet best, net als in Nederland. De wind was koud. Af en toe was het ideaal weer om te schilderen; bewolkt met weinig wind, kortom heel stabiel.

Het licht is dan de hele dag nagenoeg gelijk en je kunt in alle rust aan een landschap werken. Ik kreeg het helaas niet af, en de volgende dag was het wisselend bewolkt, wat betekende dat ik af en toe op de wolken moest wachten om met hetzelfde licht te schilderen.

The past few weeks the weather was also not very nice in France. The wind was cold. Occasionally it was ideal weather to paint; cloudy with light winds, in short, very stable. The whole day the light is almost equal and you can work in peace to paint the landscape. Unfortunately I could not finish it in one day. The next day it was both cloudy and sunny, which meant that I had to wait occasionally for clouds to get the same light to paint.

Op ’t duin

Het begon met een idee voor een boek. Nicolaas Matsier, Helmi Goudswaard en Boudewijn Bakker namen het initiatief om een bloemlezing te maken van honderd duingedichten. Daarbij selecteerden ze ook honderd duingezichten. En dan was het natuurlijk ook aardig als het Haags Historisch Museum daar een tentoonstelling aan zou wijden. Daar waren ze wel voor te porren. En toen Lex van Tilborg, de conservator van het museum daarover sprak met Leo van Heijningen was het idee voor een parallelle expositie in Kunstzaal Van Heijningen snel geboren.

Beide exposities zijn nu te zien in Den Haag. Bij Van Heijningen tot 10 mei, in het museum t/m 15 september.

Duinen bij Hoek van Holland (40 x 40 cm) 2015

It started with an idea for a book. Nicolaas Matsier, Helmi Goudswaard and Boudewijn Bakker took the initiative to create an anthology of one hundred dune poems. In doing so, they also selected one hundred dune paintings. And then it was of course also nice if the Hague Historical Museum would make an exhibition on this theme. There they were enthousiastic. And when Lex van Tilborg, the curator of the museum spoke with Leo van Heijningen the idea for a parallel exhibition in Kunstzaal Van Heijningen was immediatly born.

Both exhibits are now on display in the Hague. At Van Heijningen to 10th may, at the museum until september 15th.

Kinderen (children)

Children in Lamu town

Op Lamu is geen verkeer, alleen voetgangers en ezels, dus kinderen kunnen overal vrij spelen. Zodra je ezel ergens staat opgesteld komen ze overal vandaan. Ze willen vooral graag op m’n palet kijken en komen daardoor heel dichtbij staan en voor ik het weet sta ik op een kindervoetje als ik een pas naar achteren doe om mijn werk te bekijken. Een begeleider kan de kinderen een beetje op afstand houden, maar in Lamu Town moest ik me zelf redden. En dat lukte aardig. Ze gaven me de ruimte om achteruit te lopen.

On Lamu is no traffic, only pedestrians and donkeys, so children can play freely. Once your easel is placed somewhere they come from everywhere. They especially like to watch on my palette and thereby come very close and before I know it I stand on a child’s foot if I step backward to view my work. A companion can keep the children a bit away, but I had to manage myself in Lamu Town. And I succeeded. They gave me the space to walk backward.

De verf is fascinerend. Ze praten druk met elkaar over wat ze zien. Tussen het Swahili door hoor ik de namen van de kleuren in het Engels: “red, yellow, blue, brown”. En terwijl ze het uitspreken wijzen ze het aan op mijn palet. Dat gaat wel eens mis, de verf wordt geraakt. En wrijven helpt niet, het wordt steeds erger. Maar gelukkig heb ik babydoekjes bij me. Ze laten heel geduldig hun handje weer door me schoonmaken.

The paint is fascinating. They talk lively with each other about what they see. Between Swahili I hear the names of the colors in English: “red, yellow, blue, brown”. And while they are pronouncing it they point them on my palette. Sometimes it goes wrong, the paint is hit. And rubbing doesn’t help, it’s getting worse. But luckily I have baby wipes with me. They allow me very patiently to clean their little hand.

De meeste kinderen spreken goed Engels, ik heb vaak aardige gesprekjes. Dit keer was het wat pijnlijk:
“What nice dresses do you wear.”
“My grandfather is dead.”

Most children speak English, I often have nice conversations. This time it was a bit painful:
“What nice dresses do you wear.”
“My grandfather is dead.”

Baobab

Baobab (30 x 30 cm) 2015

De baobabs zijn heel bijzonder. Een enorme stam, geen of nauwelijks bladeren en grote vruchten met een houtachtige schil bekleed met fluweel. Je kunt er snoepjes en sap van maken.

Baobabs are very special. A huge trunk, little or no leaves and large fruits with a woody shell coated with velvet. They make sweets and juice from the fruits.

Matondoni

Matondoni 30 x 30 cm 2015

Met de boot naar Matondoni een dorp dat ook op het eiland Lamu ligt. Mijn begeleider maakte nergens een probleem van. Ik moest een pleister kopen (los te koop) voor een wondje, “no problem”. Ik moest naar de wc, “no problem” en hij bracht me naar een huis waar ik gebruik kon maken van het gat in de grond. Ik kon mijn koekjes niet terugvinden, “there they are, no problem.” Hij vond dat hij me goed had geholpen en dat was ook zo.
“If you want to give me some money, that’s no problem.”

By boat to the village of Matondoni which is also on the island of Lamu. My companion thought that nothing was a problem. I had to buy a plaster (sold separately) for a small wound, “no problem”. I had to go to the toilet, “no problem” and he brought me to a house where I could make use of the hole in the ground. I could not find my biscuits, “there they are, no problem.” He felt he had helped me well and I agree to that.
“If you want to give me some money, that’s no problem.”

Lamu town vanaf een dhow (from a dhow)

Lamu town (30 x 60 cm)

Vanochtend werd voor Lamu Town het anker van de dhow (traditionele zeilboot) uitgegooid, zodat we vanaf het water de stad konden schilderen. Omar, de kapitein, probeerde met alle middelen om het schip op een vaste plek te houden, wat niet meeviel vanwege de sterke stroming.

This morning, in front of Lamu Town the anchor of the dhow (traditional sailboat) was thrown out so that we could paint the city from the water. Omar, the captain, tried by all means to keep the ship in a permanent location, which was difficult because of the strong current.

Weeshuis Anidan (orphanage)

Dit is het grote terrein van het weeshuis Anidan, net buiten Lamu Town. De kinderen poseerden voor ons en ze deden dat vol overgave. Een enkeling smeekte bijna om ook te mogen poseren.
Ik heb een aardig portretje gemaakt, maar ging er in het hotel nog wat aan doen en heb het vervolgens totaal verprutst. Zonder het model voor me lukt het echt niet. Dus geen schilderij om te laten zien. www.anidan.org gineke anidan

Anidan, just outside of Lamu Town. The kids posed for us and they did so diligently. A few almost begged to also may pose. I have created a fairly nice portrait, but worked on it in the hotel and after a while it was totally messed up. Without the model in front of me it doesn’t work. This little girl insisted upon dragging my cart across the loose sand. After a while she gave up.

Maweni

Vier jaar geleden waren we hier ook en de beeldhouwer Joachim Sauter was zo onder de indruk van de steenhakkers dat hij er regelmatig terugkeerde. De steenhakkers werden door hem uit hout gehakt en een ervan torent hoog boven het haventje uit.

Four years ago we visited this place for the first time and the sculptor Joachim Sauter was so impressed by the stone hackers that he returned here regularly. He cut the hackers out of wood and one of the sculptures is now standing high above the little harbour of the village. P1120622

De stenen worden met de hand uit de bodem gehakt en met ezels vervoerd naar het haventje waar ze weer met de hand worden ingeladen.

The stones are cut by hand from the earth and transported with donkeys to the harbour where they are loaded by hand again.

Restaurantje in Shela (Lamu)

Rangaleni (Shela) (40 x 40 cm) 2015

Het dorp Shela bestaat uit dicht op elkaar gebouwde huizen met kleine steegjes. Het duurt even voor je er je weg vindt. De manier van bouwen geeft veel schaduw en prachtige doorkijkjes. Als je uren op een plek staat krijg je een beetje een indruk van het leven op straat. Het winkeltje waar ik naast sta heeft veel aanloop (en die mensen staan natuurlijk in mijn uitzicht), uit de school komen spreekkoren van kinderen; “a, e, i o u”. In de klassen is het permanent rumoerig. De hele kleintjes spelen met elkaar of kijken wat ik uitvoer. Een mooie twintigarige meid vraagt of ik haar wil schilderen. Ik heb voor haar een afspraak geregeld met Natalia Dik.

P1120583 The village of Shela consists of compactly built houses with small alleys. It takes a while before you find your way. The method of building gives a lot of shade and beautiful views. If you spend hours in one place is you get a bit of an impression of life on the street. The shop where I am next to has many run up (and those people are, of course, in my view), from the school I hear chants of children; “a, e, i o u”. In the classes it is noisy all the time. The little ones are playing with each other or want to see what I am doing. A beautiful girl of about twenty years of age asks me if I want to paint her. I have arranged an appointment for her with Natalia Dik.

P1120591 Ze willen allemaal zien wat ik doe en praten er uitgebreid over. Af en toe versta ik wat. Ze benoemen de kleuren in het Engels.

They all want to see what I’m doing and talk extensively about it. I occasionally understand something they say. They are naming the colors in English.
