Ik word getroffen door iets in het landschap. Bepaalde vormen of kleuren. Wat ik in dit landschap zo mooi vond waren de blauwe bergen in de verte. Ik begin met het bepalen van de compositie. Wat moet er op het doek komen? De grootte van het doek, rechthoekig of vierkant is hiervan ook afhankelijk. Je kunt een diaraampje of je handen gebruiken om de compositie te bepalen.
I am struck by something in the landscape. Colours or forms. What I liked here are the blue mountains. I start with defining the composition. What should be on the canvas? The size of the canvas, rectangular or square is also dependent on this. You can use your hands or a frame for defining the composition.
Ik geef het doek een egale kleur en schets met penseel de voorstelling. Op mijn palet probeer ik de kleuren te mengen die ik zie. Met een penseel breng ik die kleuren aan.
I give the canvas a monochrome color and with a brush I sketch the scene. On my palette, I try to mix the colours that I see. With a brush I apply those colours.
Als het hele tafereel geschilderd is kijk ik nog eens goed naar de kleuren en meng ze veel nauwkeuriger dan de eerste keer. Nu breng ik nog een laag verf aan met m’n paletmes.
If the whole scene is painted I look again at the colours and mix them much more accurate than I did the first time. Now I apply another layer of paint with my palette knife.
Thuis kijk ik of er nog iets moet gebeuren. Dat kan zonder dat je het landschap voor je hebt. Het schilderij staat immers op zichzelf.
At home I look if anything is okay. This you can do without seeing the landscape. Only the painting is important, not if it is accurate.
